1. Teach Maths, English, Science at all levels. Evening after 4 pm

  1. Help handle the audio visual instruments such as projector, CD, educational films
  2. Teach kids songs
  3. Entertain kids with magic tricks, games etc, to make coming to school a fun process and reduce absenteeism
  4. Give lessons on practical living: basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, how to mend things around the house
  5. Give sex education talks
  6. For two weeks in summer, someone to train children for track events and team games during the annual sports camp
  7. Sports coaches (professional players or coaches would be ideal)

Vidyarambam

 (Has 600 education support centers in 12 districts, including Vellore. Teaches upto Class V students. Looks after underperforming kids)

 

Needed:

Tamil and English story/comic books for children upto primary level

 

Volunteer:

1. Teach ‘Basic English Classes’ for beginners and for tutors for two weeks in summer (May/June). Visit rural areas and report on working of the centers, singly or in groups of two etc. Basic accommodation and travel will be provided. Briefing will be given on what needs to be checked. Will involve two day’s stay and two nights to travel up and down.
2. Teach ‘Basic English Classes’ for trainers and for rural tutors for two weeks in summer (April/May). Assignment in Tirunelveli and Nagapattinam district
3. Volunteer teachers  for our English medium Nursery and Primary school at Nagapattinam.

Nandini Voice for Deprived

Needs:

 

1. Urgently required: Space for a small outlet to sell products and art pieces made by the disabled.

2. Computers for the free computer schools for the underprivileged

 

Volunteer:

 

    1. Buy products from the existing outlet in T Nagar, or from the disabled sellers who can be sent to individual houses of interested buyers. Contact Ph: 044 24916037
    2. Organise an exhibition of products and art by disabled people, thereby helping give them a source of income.

Olcott School (free private school for the poor)

 

Needed:

  1. Racks for the library
  2. Metal bowls for food for the children’s protein enhanced meal (minimum 25 bowls or multiples of 25)
  3. Steel glasses (any number)
  4. Old fridge (for the crafts section, to store jams, ground masala, bulk tomatoes etc)
  5. Subscriptions for magazines like Chandamama or Magic pot, Tulika books, hardbound English books (basic stories)
  6. Grass mats (new, any number)
  7. Clothes (old will do) for children

 

Volunteers:

  1. Full time teacher and volunteer teachers
  2. Volunteers to play the games designed by the school (indoor games, will take place at volunteer’s time of convenience and during student’s free periods)
  3. Special educators, or people with much patience to help learning disabled children (commuting money can be offered)
  4. Housewives etc to help kids who have parents unable o coach them after class
  5. People who can help with sports or athletics. Games like football, volleyball, kabadi, badminton
  6. Someone to supervise activity in the laying out of the playground in May/June
  7. To help in fund raising
  8. Carpentry teacher from 2-4 in the afternoons (material already exists)

1. Fees for a student: Rs.6000 annually Rs. 3,000 half yearly, Rs. 1,500 quarterly, Rs. 500 every month, Rs. 250 every month Rs. 100 every month

Deepam (Free computer skills training and general awareness for under-privileged kids)

 

Needed

1. Just connect Deepam to groups of under-privileged kids anywhere in Chennai and the trainers will run a 20-week course. Currently Deepam runs three courses in South Chennai and is ready to spread further.

2. Old computers/laptops

 

Volunteer:

1. On weekends (two hours anytime between 2 to 5 in the afternoon) to teach the children

Location: At a Government run School in Besant Nagar and at a kuppam in Besant Nagar

2. To spread awareness about the programmes

Needed:

1. Gift class by class notebooks, stationery, colors, crayons

2. Old computers

 

Volunteer:

1. Mentor underprivileged children through the Poornavidya project which is involved in teaching children at the corporation school opposite Ashtalakshmi temple, Kalakshetra Colony, Besant Nagar.

2. Document the projects, training material and methods devised

3. Urgently needed: Cover the annual free teachers training programme held in IIT for educators from all over the state

4. Visit and monitor/ check the work at balwadis in Adyar

5. Sing songs and entertain at the balwadis in Adyar
